First came the dragons, then came the White Walkers, now comes Withnail: legendary British actor Richard E Grant is apparently set to appear in the new series of Game of Thrones.

It is currently unknown which character Grant will be playing, but the show has appeared on the actor’s online CV on his talent agency’s website. His casting has not yet been officially announced by Game of Thrones’ network HBO.

Grant is just one of a number of big-name actors who are joining the latest season of the epic fantasy drama, with Deadwood actor Ian McShane set for a small but important role, and Max Von Sydow taking over the role of the elderly Three Eyed Raven man who was briefly introduced at the end of Season 4.

Some have suggested that Grant could be taking a theatre-based role, described in this recent casting call (via Game of Thrones fan site Watchers on the Wall):

“Grand Theatre Actor/Manager (55 – 70) The larger-than-life leader of a troupe of actors. He specializes in portraying drunken aristocrats. He is a huge presence on stage and rather nasty to his company when off-stage.”

It’s also possible that Grant has been cast as Theon Greyjoy’s uncle Aeron, who is said to play a major part in the forthcoming series.

Let’s be honest though – what we all really want is an hour-long episode with Grant’s character and Tyrion Lannister getting together to drink the finest wines available to humanity. HBO, make that happen please.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for ARG Talent told the Evening Standard: "I can confirm that Richard has been cast in Game of Thrones."
